The importance of technologies is growing
rapidly in every field of our life. Every year big companies like Apple are
coming up with their latest product with some improvement of their previous
ones. They do this from the data they collect from their costumer or consumer.
Like them hospitals especially doctors are collecting the data from patient to
cure or prevent the disease better and faster. But the challenge comes when the
data are about human’s life. We are many in numbers and there is always new
kind of disease out bursting everyday.
It was interesting for me to find out that “Ninety per cent of the data in the world has been created in the past two years alone.” Another thing that got my attention was the amount of time it used to take for sequencing human genome was years, now it can be done within a less than a week. This shows the growth of technologies and its capabilities within few years. Another thing that author focus in this article is the “understanding of the genetic basis of human diseases.” Also I was happy to find out that there are “large-scale projects such as the 100,000 Genomes Project are starting to give some families a diagnosis for their children's mystery conditions.” It is always good to see that the technologies are being used to help people. In near future doctors will be able to prevent the diseases long before it can harm person or cause pain to family.

Overall the challenges are many to use big data even though
it saves many lives. The author overlooked the fact that the third world
countries will not have access to this resource. Only developed nation like
United States, United Kingdom and other wealthy nations will have access to
this resources. Still in this developed countries not every citizen can afford
this.
Collecting data and being able to process it in less time is definitely an asset to the medical field. I believe that this will enable doctors to catch diseases in the early stages and to find cures for some we never thought possible. Just recently in Time Magazine there was an article about immune therapy to treat cancer. This was the treatment used for President Carter that put him in remission. Although this treatment has been successful it is not offered to everyone and comes with a high price tag. My only hope is that with all these advances in science and technology we can make them affordable for all not just the rich and famous.
